What is Empiget?

Empiget contains empagliflozin, a prescription medicine belonging to a class of drugs called SGLT2 inhibitors. It is used to manage type 2 diabetes in adults, reduce the risk of heart-related death in people with type 2 diabetes and existing heart disease, treat heart failure in adults, and slow the progression of chronic kidney disease.

Dosage and how to take it

Empiget is taken once daily, in the morning, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole — do not crush or chew it.

For type 2 diabetes, the usual starting dose is 10 mg once daily. Your doctor may increase this to 25 mg if needed. For heart failure and chronic kidney disease, the recommended dose is 10 mg once daily. Always follow your doctor's prescribed dose.

Who is Empiget suitable for?

Empiget is prescribed for adults with type 2 diabetes, adults with heart failure (with or without diabetes), and adults with chronic kidney disease. It is not suitable for people with type 1 diabetes, severe kidney failure, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Common side effects

Some people may experience genital yeast infections, urinary tract infections, increased urination, thirst, nausea, or mild drops in blood pressure. These are usually manageable. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice signs of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), severe genital infection, or a serious allergic reaction.

Important safety information

Empiget is a prescription-only medicine. Do not take it without a valid prescription from a licensed doctor. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially diuretics or insulin, as these can interact with empagliflozin. Keep out of reach of children and store below 30°C in a dry place away from direct sunlight.
