Gliclazide 80mg Teva
What is Gliclazide 80 mg?
Gliclazide 80 mg is a prescription tablet used to treat type 2 diabetes in adults. It belongs to a group of medicines called sulfonylureas, which work by stimulating the pancreas to produce more insulin. It is typically prescribed when diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes alone have not been enough to control blood sugar levels.
Dosage and how to take it
Gliclazide 80 mg tablets should always be taken with or just before a meal. The usual starting dose is 40 mg to 80 mg once daily. Your doctor may gradually increase this up to a maximum of 320 mg per day (4 tablets) depending on how well your blood sugar is controlled. Doses above 160 mg are usually split into a morning and evening dose. Elderly patients are typically started on a lower dose.
Always take gliclazide at the same time each day. Never skip a meal after taking it, as this increases the risk of low blood sugar.
Recognising and managing low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)
The most common side effect of gliclazide is low blood sugar, known as hypoglycaemia. You should know the warning signs: shakiness, sweating, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, sudden hunger, or confusion. Always carry a fast-acting source of sugar such as glucose tablets, fruit juice, or regular sweets with you in case of an episode. If symptoms are severe or do not improve quickly, seek medical help immediately.
Common side effects
Some people may experience low blood sugar, nausea, stomach upset, diarrhoea, constipation, headache, skin rash, or gradual weight gain. These are usually mild and manageable.
Seek immediate medical attention if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusual bruising or bleeding, signs of a severe allergic reaction, or loss of consciousness.
Who should not take Gliclazide?
Do not take gliclazide if you have type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe kidney or liver disease, or a known allergy to sulfonylureas or sulfonamide medicines. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take. Gliclazide can interact with several common medicines including aspirin, warfarin, fluconazole, beta-blockers, and certain antibiotics, which may affect how well it works or increase your risk of side effects.
Storage
Store gliclazide tablets below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep in the original packaging and out of the reach of children. Do not use the tablets after the expiry date printed on the pack.
