What is Okolins Potassium Chloride Injection 1g? Okolins Potassium Chloride (KCl) Injection 1g is a sterile, concentrated intravenous electrolyte solution manufactured by Medipharm. It is used exclusively in clinical settings to treat and correct low potassium levels in the blood — a condition known as hypokalaemia. Each vial contains 1 gram of potassium chloride, which must be diluted before administration and given by slow intravenous infusion under careful medical supervision. What is Okolins KCl Injection used for? Okolins is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe hypokalaemia in hospitalised patients across a wide range of clinical settings. The most common causes requiring IV potassium replacement include potassium loss from loop diuretics such as furosemide or thiazide diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea causing significant gastrointestinal losses, nasogastric suction or surgical fistula drainage, metabolic alkalosis (a shift in blood pH that drives potassium into cells), severe malnutrition or inadequate dietary intake, and prolonged use of corticosteroids. It is also routinely used as part of electrolyte management in patients on total parenteral nutrition (TPN), in perioperative and intensive care settings, and critically in patients on digoxin therapy where even mild hypokalaemia significantly increases the risk of digoxin toxicity and life-threatening arrhythmias.
Dosage and administration — for clinical use only Dosing is strictly individualised by the treating physician based on the patient's serum potassium level, clinical condition, body weight, renal function, and concurrent medications. Okolins must always be diluted before use — typically in 500 ml to 1000 ml of normal saline (0.9% NaCl) or 5% dextrose solution — and administered by slow intravenous infusion. The rate of infusion must not exceed 10–20 mmol (approximately 0.75–1.5 g of KCl) per hour under standard conditions, and should only exceed this rate in critical care environments with continuous cardiac monitoring and frequent electrolyte checks. The infusion site should be monitored for signs of pain, redness, or phlebitis throughout administration.
Side effects and monitoring parameters When used correctly, Okolins is well-tolerated. The primary risks arise from too-rapid infusion or excessive dosing, which can cause hyperkalaemia (high potassium) — manifesting as irregular heartbeat, muscle weakness, tingling, and in severe cases, cardiac arrest. Other side effects include pain or burning at the infusion site, phlebitis (inflammation of the vein), nausea, and vomiting. Potassium levels should be checked before, during, and after infusion. An ECG should be monitored continuously when infusing at higher rates or in high-risk patients.
Who should not receive IV potassium chloride? Okolins is contraindicated in patients with existing hyperkalaemia (elevated potassium), severe oliguria or anuria (significantly reduced or absent urine output), untreated Addison's disease, and those with known hypersensitivity to potassium chloride. It requires extreme caution in patients with any degree of kidney impairment, as the kidneys are the primary route of potassium excretion, and reduced kidney function significantly increases the risk of dangerous potassium accumulation. Concurrent use with potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g. amiloride, spironolactone) or ACE inhibitors/ARBs greatly increases hyperkalaemia risk and requires close monitoring.
Storage and handling Store vials below 25°C, away from light and moisture. Do not freeze.
