What is Ramipril 5mg Used For?

- Heart Failure After a Heart Attack — Ramipril is used in some patients with heart failure after a heart attack to reduce the risk of death and hospitalisation. It may be started within the first few days after a heart attack to increase the survival rate.
- Cardiovascular Risk Reduction — Ramipril is also used to reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes, or death in patients 55 years of age or older with serious heart disease.
How to Take Ramipril 5mg
- The usual starting dose is between 1.25mg and 2.5mg once a day, increased gradually over a few weeks to the usual dose. The maximum dose is 5mg twice a day or 10mg once a day.
- Ramipril can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole.
- Your doctor may suggest you take your first dose at bedtime because it can cause dizziness. After the first dose, if you do not feel dizzy, you can take it at any time of day — try to take it at the same time every day.
- Your doctor will probably start you on a low dose and gradually increase it. Ramipril controls high blood pressure and heart failure but does not cure them — continue taking it even if you feel well.
- Never stop Ramipril abruptly without speaking to your doctor first.
Common Side Effects
Most people tolerate Ramipril well. The most frequently reported side effect is a dry, persistent cough. The cough typically develops within a few months of starting treatment and tends to resolve within one month after stopping the medication.
Other common side effects include dizziness (especially when standing up quickly), headache, and nausea. These often improve as your body adjusts to the medicine.
Seek immediate medical attention if you notice:
- Swelling of the lips, face, tongue, or throat — a rare but serious reaction called angioedema. Stop the medicine immediately and get medical help if you have this type of swelling or difficulty breathing.
- Signs of kidney problems: swollen ankles, reduced urination, or blood in urine
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes (possible liver problems)
- Severe dizziness or fainting
