What is Tenoric (Atenolol 100mg + Chlorthalidone 25mg)?

Tenoric is a fixed-dose combination tablet that brings together two complementary, proven antihypertensive medicines into a single, convenient once-daily tablet. It combines Atenolol — a cardioselective beta-blocker that slows and steadies the heart — with Chlorthalidone — a long-acting diuretic ("water pill") that flushes excess salt and fluid from the body.

Together, these two medicines attack high blood pressure through two different and complementary pathways, making Tenoric significantly more effective than either medicine used alone. It is prescribed for patients who need stronger blood pressure control — either because their blood pressure was not adequately managed on a single agent, or because their doctor determined from the outset that a combination approach was the most appropriate strategy.

What is Tenoric Used For?

Primary Indication:

• Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) — Tenoric 100/25mg is indicated for the treatment of hypertension, particularly in patients who require a step-up in therapy beyond single-agent treatment or those already established on both components at these doses.

• Taking it in the morning is generally preferred to avoid the diuretic effect disrupting sleep.
• Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water.
• Your doctor will monitor your blood pressure, heart rate, kidney function, and electrolytes (especially potassium) during treatment.
• Never stop Tenoric suddenly. If it is necessary to discontinue, the dosage should be reduced gradually over several weeks. Abrupt discontinuation can cause exacerbation of angina and, in some cases, myocardial infarction. 

Common Side Effects

From Atenolol (Beta-Blocker) component:

• Tiredness or fatigue — especially in the first few weeks
• Slow heart rate (bradycardia)
• Dizziness or lightheadedness — particularly when standing up quickly
• Cold hands and feet — due to reduced peripheral circulation
• Sleep disturbances or vivid dreams

From Chlorthalidone (Diuretic) component:

• Increased urination — especially when first starting
• Mild dizziness or lightheadedness
• Low potassium levels (hypokalaemia) — may cause muscle cramps, weakness, or irregular heartbeat
• Low sodium levels (hyponatraemia) — may cause headache, confusion, or fatigue

Seek immediate medical attention if you notice:

• Chest pain, severe shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing — particularly lying flat
• Very slow pulse (below 50 beats per minute)
• Signs of low potassium: muscle weakness, leg cramps, fluttering in the chest
• Signs of allergic reaction: hives, severe rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
