Levofloxacin 500mg/100ml Infusion
Levofloxacin 500mg/100ml infusion is a powerful broad-spectrum antibiotic given through a drip (intravenous infusion) to treat serious or severe bacterial infections. It belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics and works by stopping bacteria from multiplying and repairing themselves, effectively clearing the infection.
What it treats Used in hospital or clinical settings to treat:
- Community-acquired pneumonia and hospital-acquired pneumonia
- Complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) and kidney infections (pyelonephritis)
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Intra-abdominal infections (alongside other medicines)
- Chronic bacterial prostatitis
- Inhalation anthrax (post-exposure prevention)
Important precautions
- Prescription only — must be prescribed by a licensed doctor
- Not recommended for children and adolescents under 18
- Use with caution in patients with epilepsy, kidney disease, or a history of tendon problems
- May cause tendon damage (especially Achilles tendon) — stop use and inform a doctor immediately if pain or swelling occurs
- Can prolong the QT interval — caution in patients with heart conditions or those on heart medications
- Avoid excessive sun exposure during treatment — levofloxacin increases sensitivity to sunlight
- Inform your doctor of all current medications, especially antacids, iron supplements, and blood thinners, as interactions can occur
Who should not use it
- Patients with a known allergy to levofloxacin or other fluoroquinolone antibiotics
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women unless directed by a doctor
- Patients with a history of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolone use
